On Nov. 11, Hawaii News Now announced its winners of the 34th annual Hawaii International Film Festival Audience Awards. During this edition of the festival, audiences voted for favorite narrative feature, documentary feature and short film. Ballots were distributed for the screenings of every eligible film during the festival.

The Best Narrative Feature award went to “What We Do In the Shadows.” Directed by Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clements, this hysterical docu-style film delves into the living quarters of vampires and how their friendships and camaraderie are just as important as feasting upon the flesh of mortals.

Dean Kaneshiro’s “Rise of the Wahine” took Best Documentary Feature. Set in the 1970s around a small band of minority pioneers from Hawaii, this documentary presents racial and gender struggles in the world of girls’ sports.

The animated short “Lava,” directed by James Ford Murphy, secured the win for Best Short Film. Pixar’s latest musical love story pays homage to the beauty of tropical islands and ocean volcanoes and features voice acting and music by island talents Kuana Torres Kahele and Napua Greig.

The Hawaii International Film Festival closed on Nov. 9.
